The Ampersand (&) Difference

  • CMST& (Common Course Numbering): In Washington, some courses have the same number across all community and technical colleges. These are “common courses.” If a course from a different college has the same number and subject as Highline’s, and an ampersand (&), then they’re considered the same course. They are designed to transfer seamlessly between these schools. Examples at Highline include CMST& 101 (Introduction to Communication) and CMST& 102 (Introduction to Mass Media).

  • CMST (Highline-Specific): Courses without the ampersand are unique to Highline College. While they still transfer to four-year universities (often under a Direct Transfer Agreement), they don't have a pre-matched course at every other community or technical college. Examples include CMST 205 (Nonverbal Communication) or CMST 320 (Presentation Skills).
